Red Roosters Sweep Crowns

We continue to play really good baseball and are now 3-0. Nick Chinners hit a walk-off two-run homerun in the eighth to win the first game 3-1. Tyler Howard got the win pitching in the 7th and 8th. Mike Pagano pitched a great six innings allowing just a solo homer in the 4th.

In the second game we won 10-1. Dan Gross started and pitched great in the first five innings. Zach Deutscher closed out the game in the sixth and seventh. Wes Wilson hit a two-run homerun and Rob Stacy hit a triple with the bases loaded to open up the game with a 7-1 lead in the fifth.

I will try to give more of an update tomorrow.

On another note, Rider lost their first two games of the NCAA Regional. AJ Albee, Steve Galella, and Mike DiPietropolo should be joining us sometime this week. Congratulations to them and the Broncos for a great season! St. Peter's pitcher Andrew Costello is flying into Charlotte tomorrow.

Finally, I continue to be amazed at the group of young men we have. I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys. What wonderful young men! Every single one of them handle themselves with class and humility. All parents should be very proud.

5-30-08 "Box Score"

I don't have an automated score system, so I did the best I could on MS Word. I just did the box for the Pageland Red Roosters. I will try to develop a program in the next week to make things easier on me and easier to read for you. If you click on the image it will enlarge and be easier to see.

Red Roosters Win Opener 6-3

We played a great game tonight to win the first game of the Tar Heel Summer Baseball League! We went up 6-0 and gave up 3 in the bottom of the eighth, but were able to hold on for the 6-3 win. I will try to post more info tomorrow. We had a lot of good things happen at the top of the lineup and Nick Chinners went 3 for 5 to lead the way. Jeff Bayse gave us a great start giving up just two hits in 5 and a third innings. Alex Loftin got the save.

Most Players Have Reported; Rider in NCAA Regionals

Well, after a hectic few days almost all the players have reported. We are missing a few from the original roster, but have added another. Unfortunately, Doug Dekoning of UW-Milwaukee and Chris Lalonde of Centenary will not be joining us this summer.

New Arrivals
Arriving yesterday was recent signee, Mario Sencion. Mario, from Burlington County College was a pre-season NJCAA All-American pitcher. We also had Marcos Torres, a C/1B from Felician College give an verbal commitment. Torres was first team all CACC and named to the third team of the NJCBA. He should be driving up from his home in Miami this weekend.

NCAA Tournament Action
Also in Red Rooster news is that our Rider players won the MAAC Conference Tournament as the #4 seed and are going to be playing in the Cal-State Fullerton Regional this weekend. They face top seeded CS-Fullerton at 11 p.m. EST.

Week 1
Practices have been going well. We have gotten a lot done in the past few days, and the players are working hard. I have been really impressed with how quickly they have picked up our communication and the defense they have played. Defense will be key for us to win this season.

I really like the team we have. They have molded well so far. I can't say enough about the kids themselves. What fantastic young men we have! I can write with the utmost sincerity when I say that they have all impressed me immensely with how they have handled themselves on and off of the baseball field. All of their parents should be proud.

Our first game is tomorrow against the Monroe Channelcats at 5 p.m. EST. It is opening night for the THSBL. Our game will be followed with the Anson Rough Riders and Charlotte Crowns. Jeff Bayse of St. Peter's will start for us tomorrow. On Saturday, Mike Pagano will start Game 1 against the Charlotte Crowns and Dan Gross Game 2.

Players
I have debated whether or not to put particulars about guys who have been impressing me so far. I do not want to offend others on the team or "play favorites." However, this league is for these ball players to get looks and interest from teams at the next level, and any extra "face time" I can give may help them achieve that goal. With that in mind, I will list Players of the Day on gamedays and also Players of the Week. I will also try to do bios on the boys throughout the summer.

Players of the Week for the first week of practice.
Conor Mullee- I really haven't seen him swing as much as I probably should, but he has amazed me with his glove. He has already made three plays that I've never seen before. He is so much fun to watch take groundballs. I am beginning to challenge him more with the fungo just so I can see some of the spectacular plays he can make.

Mike Pagano- I have not seen the guys pitch yet (I'm leaving that part up to Pitching Coach Jeff Hanson), but I was very impressed with the way he holds runners. Probably the best I have seen this year at the college level. I don't imagine many people will be stealing bases while Mike is pitching.

Tyler Howard- Tyler really hit the ball hard yesterday. He hit one out of the park off of me (which isn't saying much), and then three more hard off of Coach Hanson. He seems to be making the adjustment to wood without much difficulty.

Post Season Honors and Tournaments

There have been a host of Red Roosters who have earned recognition for their play this season. As mentioned in an earlier post, Rodney Francis was named to the All-Commonwealth 2nd Team.

Doug Dekoning of UW-Milwaukee has had a busy late season. He was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. The Panthers also won their first game of the Horizon League Tournament 10-7 in 14 innings against Cleveland State. Milwaukee will play tomorrow at either 2 p.m. CST against Wright State or at 6 p.m. CST against UIC. The time and opponent will be determined based on the result of the Valparaiso/Youngstown State game.

Steve Galella of Rider University was named to the New Jersey College Baseball Association(NJCBA) All-Rookie Team. The Broncos begin the MAAC Tournament tomorrow at 6 p.m. EST against Cansius.

Conor Mullee of St. Peter's College was named to the NJCBA Second Team. Both Rider and St. Peter's play in the MAAC, which has not yet released All-Conference Teams.

Nick Chinners and Kory Morian of Charleston Southern were knocked out of the Big South Tournament yesterday. The Bucs were beaten 6-1 by Radford. Kory had two hits in the game.

Wes Wilson of Indiana University is involved in a game as I type. I tried to get live stats, but have been unable to find a score. Check back later with an update.

Chris LaLonde of Centenary College will play in the Summit League Tournament, which begins tomorrow. They will face Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. CST.

Two Red Roosters were ousted from the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament last week. Andrew Pooler of St. Joseph's-Maine lost their first two games last week. Mike Pagano and Augustana were able to pull off two exciting bottom of the ninth wins to start the tournament 2-0. Unfortunately, they the lost two of their next three and were eliminated one game from the Division III World Series.

Finally, Steele Myers of Jordan High School in North Carolina made it to the 3rd round of the North Carolina State Playoffs. Steele was named to the 4-A(Largest Division) All-State Team as a junior. He has committed to Virginia Military Institute.

Congratulations to everyone on great seasons and good luck to all those still playing!

10 Days Until Camp

Something exciting begins to happen when you are able to look at where you will be on the 10-day forecast. Apparently it is going to be in the mid 80s with a chance of thunderstorms, but I'm sure that will change in ten days.

For me there is definitely a sense of excitement. My wife, Jessica, is beginning to think about packing and what we can fit in the car. I am wrapping things up with putting the team together and getting information (and trying to get a couple more quality pitchers). Some players have wrapped up their seasons, but about half of them are still playing and hoping their college teams are playing the same weekend we are supposed to report!

Most Red Roosters will be reporting on Saturday the 24th by 5p.m. We will have some orientation and a light workout. On Sunday we will head to Lowe's Motor Speedway and help our with the race.

Only 16 more days until we open the season!

Red Roosters Prepare for Regionals

Three Pageland Red Roosters are preparing for the NCAA Division III Regionals taking place this weekend. Mike Pagano of Augustana (IL) and Andrew Pooler of St. Joseph's-Maine will be playing this weekend in different regionals.

Mike is considered the ace for the third seeded Vikings (32-11). He will have a bit of an advantage, because the Vikings host the Central Regional, which begins on Thursday. They will face fourth seeded Wartburg (26-13) at 7 p.m. CNT.

Andrew is one of the main relief pitchers for the sixth seeded Monks (28-16). They travel to Harwich, Massachusetts in the New England Regional where they will face third seeded Keene State (33-9). Andrew has been part of two of the Monks five shutouts this season.

We wish these guys the best of luck and hope they make the D3 World Series in Appleton, WI!

One other Red Rooster's team, Morgan Gregory of Carson-Newman, is getting ready to play in the NCAA Division II South Regional in Tampa, Florida. The fifth seeded Eagles (41-16) will play second seeded Tusculum (40-13) on Thursday. Morgan took a medical red-shirt this year.

Pageland Red Rooster, Rodney Francis, of Elizabethtown College was named to Second Team All-Commonwealth. Rodney hit .366 with two home runs and a team-high 39 runs batted in while starting all 38 games in center field. He finished second in the conference and on the team in stolen bases with 21, and also led the team in triples (4) and walks (29) while adding five outfield assists. Rodney was also named Conference Player of the Week twice this season.

The Elizabethtown Blue Jays finished the season 26-12. They were crowned regular season champs and runners-up in the conference tournament.

22 Days Until Opening Day

We are just 22 days away until the Pageland Red Rooster's inaugural game and the Tar Heel Summer Baseball League's 2008 opening day at Piedmont Park in Monroe, NC! The Red Roosters will open their season on Saturday, May 30th at 6 p.m. against the Monroe Channelcats. The home opener at the Roost (the unofficial name I pegged our home field at Central High School in Pageland) will be on Sunday, May 31st where we will play a doubleheader against the Charlotte Crowns.

Our family is really looking forward to getting down to Pageland or Monroe (I'm not really sure which city the league has placed our residnce yet), and getting things going. I am ready to have a great summer playing some great baseball.

Players will report on the weekend of May 24th to Pageland Central. The Red Roosters are scheduled to play 43 regular season games, 23 of which will be played at home. On top of the regular season, there will be a League Championship and the North Carolina State Tournament in which they will participate. The winner of the NCST qualifies for the National Baseball Congress World Series, held in Wichita, KS.
